This is not conventional beauty that Elsa Chesnel is after; her experimentation rather gravitates towards the expressive trade of human emotions. Self taught in the visual arts, Elsa Chesnel rejected integrating into a French Art School to focus on immigrating to Canada. This decade of apparent setback in her artistic growth returned with a vengeance of darkness and colors, sending her staggering toward abstraction. Elsa regained her footing remembering Kandinsky’s reckless curves, experimenting with Sonia Delaunay’s bold colors, and discovering Joan’s Mitchell’s aggressive softness. Charcoal being her preferred method of expression, Elsa set out to express feelings through contrast. However, the need to explore larger formats pushed her to experiment with acrylics and thus colors.
