Chant'Ouest 2018

General informations

The 29th Chant'Ouest took place in Vancouver in 2018!

On Thursday, September 20th, 2018, the stage of the Waterfront Theater in Vancouver saw three talented author-songwriters and a band, all from the four provinces of Western Canada come together for the 29th annual Chant’Ouest!

At this event, rich in music and diversity, the rapper Kaya Free, from Saskatchewan, and the band Jeremie & The Delicious Hounds from Manitoba won the two André-Mercure awards, presented by the show’s jury. These two awards give them the opportunity to represent Western Canada at the Granby International Song Festival in August 2019. Kaya Free also won the SOCAN Song Chance Award, which recognizes the best original song, with his title Bienvenue en Saskatchewan, as well as the Audience Award, offered by the French-language press. For her part, the Alberta artist, Renelle Ray, is awarded the SACEF – Du Haut des Airs Canada Award, which offers her a residency in performance.

The edition of Chant’Ouest 2018 also featured the artist Trésor Otshudi, the representative of British Columbia, who won the Pacifique en chanson song contest in June 2018. The evening, which was crowned with four days rich in encounters and has undoubtedly brought honor to a plural and creative Francophonie.

Chant’Ouest is both a competition and a concert that serves as a unique stepping stone for Francophone artists from Western and Northern Canada looking to break into the world of popular music. It is the first link in a chain initiated by each of the four provincial events for emerging francophone music artists in Western Canada, leading the two finalists to the renowned Festival international de la chanson de Granby. Over the years, many artists from Western and Northern Canada have participated in provincial events.

Chant’Ouest is an achievement in the field if we consider that it is the only contest of the French song in the country to move annually from one province or territory to another. This competition is a collaboration between the four events of the Western music scene: Projets Découvertes (Manitoba), Nouvelles Scènes (Saskatchewan), Polyfonik (Alberta) and Pacifique en Chanson (British Columbia).

Vignette JDHPut simply, Jérémie & The Delicious Hounds are new-age fosterers of soul music. They are, however, bringing it with a twist. The band is from the old French quarter of St-Boniface, Winnipeg, the largest French speaking population in Western Canada and they are cementing their identity as bilingual artists with a unique double EP release : the self-titled English 4-song EP, and another 4-songs on their French EP, TITLE.
Jérémie Brémault’s smooth, smoky voice and earnest stage presence brings an authentic soul sound to the group’s wide-ranging style.  Manitoba’s French media have been following Jérémie since his emergence into the music scene.
