On June 8, 1990, at the Faculté Saint-Jean auditorium in Edmonton, eight artists from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia and Alberta wrote a new chapter in the history of French-language music at the first Interprovincial Song Gala.

The project was born from a partnership between the cultural organizations of the West and the regional stations of Radio-Canada, and it remains one-of-a-kind in the domain of French-language song competitions. Chant’Ouest – as it has been called since its 8th edition in Vancouver in 1997 – is the only French-language song contest in the country that chooses to move from one province or territory to another.

On September 20, 2018, Chant’Ouest continued the remarkable circuit that went from Winnipeg to Regina, through Saskatoon, Victoria, Vancouver, Moose Jaw, Edmonton and Whitehorse. In 2012, Chant’Ouest became the first event of its kind to be held north of the 60th parallel during its visit to the Yukon. It is with this momentum that the Chant’Ouest team had chosen to present the 2017 finals in Yellowknife, on the occasion of Canada’s 150th anniversary. Chant’Ouest will have traveled nearly 35,000 kilometers since its humble beginnings in Edmonton.

Over 160 finalists have succeeded on this stage over the years and a fifth of them have represented us at the Festival international de la chanson de Granby. It is often forgotten that Grandby Festival is an original partner of Chant’Ouest, as are SOCAN and Musication. We must also highlight our national broadcaster which has accompanied us faithfully from the beginning, even through the most turbulent periods of our history. We can say without a shadow of a doubt that there would be no Chant’Ouest without Radio-Canada.

Chant'Ouest is a collaboration of all four Francophone Western Music events: Pacifique en chanson (BC), Polyfonik (AB), Nouvelle Scène (SK), Découvertes manitobaines en chanson (MB).
